The Management meets series aims to provide expert insight into a variety of industries, professions and topics.
This is a forum for building on expertise by asking questions, discussing challenges and networking with others in the field.
Who is this event for?
This event is open to everyone but will be of particular interest for:
- board members of organisations of any size or sector
- those who aspire to join boards
- board advisors including strategy consultants and coaches
- those with an interest in psychology at work
- anyone intrigued to learn more about what happens in boardrooms.
What will the event cover?
The event will be led by Dr Johanne Grosvold, Associate Professor at the University of Bath School of Management, with our speakers Joy Harcup and Helen Hopper, co-authors of 'The Art and Psychology of Board Relationships: The Secret Life of Boards'. They will talk about their research on boardroom relationship dynamics, including:
- how are boards different from other teams within organisations
- common difficult relationship patterns - the surface level signs and psychology beneath them
- diversity and tokenism on boards
- the art of managing boardroom relationship dynamics.

Dr Johanne Grosvold
Dr Johanne Grosvold is an Associate Professor of Corporate Governance and CSR at the University of Bath School of Management. She is the President of the International Association of Business and Society (IABS) and the Deputy Director of Centre for Business Organizations and Society (CBOS). Johanne has worked in the space of boards and corporate governance for over 20 years, blending academic research, consulting and practice. Her work on corporate boards has won international awards.”
Joy Harcup
Joy Harcup is an executive coach at international coaching firm, Praesta LLP, working with individuals, executive teams and boards. She has 20 years of leadership coaching experience with clients including the FTSE 100, professional services, public and not-for-profit sectors. Joy was President of the UK Board of the International Coaching Federation. She’s also sat on boards in the education and charitable sectors. A former lawyer specialising in dispute resolution, she has published academic research on the impact of coaching, following her MBA from the University of Bath, School of Management.
Helen Hopper
Helen Hopper trained in management consultancy with Accenture and occupational psychology with SHL. Helen co-founded the leadership consulting firm h3 in 2010, whose mission is to stimulate growth through learning. She has degrees in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University and Psychology from The Open University. Helen supports mental health charities, is COO of The Listening Place and a Trustee at The Mix.
