Professor Guangxiao Shi presents this Centre for Research in Education in Asia (CREA) lecture. English language education at Chinese tertiary level has entered a “New Normal” phase featuring new liberal arts, blended learning, and integration of ideological and political course. Teacher agency plays a pivotal role in teachers’ professionalism and enables them to act powerfully in their teaching context.

However, teacher agency in the context of 'New Normal' English language education at Chinese tertiary level is under-examined. Adopting the Ecological Approach to Teacher Agency as the analytical framework, this study used semi- structured interviews to collect data and thematic analysis to elucidate the status quo of teacher agency and the influencing factors in the context of “New Normal” English language education at a Chinese university.

This study contributes to the current and future scholarship of teacher agency in English education at Chinese tertiary level and provides practical recommendations for teacher professional development and curriculum reform.
