2018/19 courses: This course is likely to run in November, January, April and July. Course dates will be published approximately 6 to 8 weeks beforehand.
This session will cover the following topics:
- The employee lifecycle: manager's role and procedures (recruitment, appointment, probation, SDPR and performance review).
- The University's management ethos.
- Key legal concepts and attendant duties including: health, safety and wellbeing, equality and diversity, developing self and others.
This is a 2 part course consisting of an online module and a face to face session. Please note that you are required to undertake BOTH parts of the course and you must complete the online part prior to attending one of the face to face session; details can be found in the pre-work section below.
Intended learning outcomes
After attending this course you will be able to:
- Describe your key accountabilities as a manager
- Explain the importance of equality and diversity across the employee lifecycle
- Find the relevant policies, procedures and guidance to enable you to support staff throughout the employee lifecycle
- Describe how your behaviour as a manager is consistent with the University's strategy and ethos
- Plan your own professional development as a leader and manager
Before attending this course you will need to:
- complete the Moodle course called ‘Nuts and Bolts of Managing People’ (self enrol using the enrolement key 'NABOMP').
The module has three parts (each taking approx. 30mins to complete) and concludes with a short quiz.
Effective Behaviours Framework (EBF)
The Effective Behaviours Framework (EBF) has nine key behavioural areas. This course will help you to develop skills and knowledge related to the EBF behavioural groups highlighted below:
- Managing self and personal skills
- Engaging with the wider context
- Developing self and others
Please note that attending the course does not provide evidence of achieving these behaviours; you will need to demonstrate them by applying your skills and knowledge.

- any support required post-course to enable you to transfer your learning back to the workplace
