Identifying the right test for your need
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) provide tests of English for people who do not speak English as their first language but intend to study or already study at degree level or above or require proof of English for immigration purposes.
You must make sure you are taking the correct test, for the correct reason.
The Academic level IELTS test
You will need to take this version of the test if you intend to apply for a Tier 4 student visa to a Highly Trusted / Tier 4 Sponsor (HTS) to study for a bachelor or postgraduate degree and are required to meet the English language level set by the institution.
The General level IELTS test
This version of the test is for people wishing to emigrate to Canada, New Zealand or Australia.
Test dates and booking
We arrange both Academic and General IELTS tests and have testing events every month.
Before you apply, you must read the terms and conditions for the University of Bath IELTS test centre. It contains information regarding test day security procedures, passport or identity document requirements, and cancellation and transfer policies.

Taking a test here at Bath is £165.
Make sure your address details, including postcode, are correct and complete when you apply through the IELTS online registration system. Your Test Report Form (TRF) will be posted to this address. The address details cannot be changed afterwards.
Completing your test application
Once you have completed your online application you must:
make payment via our secure online payment system, or using one of the other methods of payment listed in the application summary you will receive upon completion of your application.
submit a photocopy of the Identification Documents (ID) used on the application (Passport, National ID card or UK issued Biometric card). This can be done by post or email.
If sending by post, please write your application reference number on your photocopy of the ID.
For email, we will only accept clear, legible emailed copies of your ID. Your birth date, passport expiry date and photo must be clearly visible.
Failure to send these documents within 4 working days will result in the cancellation of your application and loss of your test fee. We no longer require passport photos, as we will take your photo on the test day.
If you have special needs or special requirements for testing, as per British Council policy, we require a minimum of 12 weeks notice before your test day. Please contact us by email or telephone before you apply.
After submitting your application and making payment, you will get an automated email confirming your application. This will include test day details and your application reference number. You will need this number if you need to contact us before the test.
