Doctoral Induction Events 2024

Details of doctoral induction events for students starting in September/October 2024.

We are very pleased to welcome you to Bath. There are a range of sessions and activities that are designed to help you get your studies off to the best possible start.

You will be able to access the booking links for the welcome reception and workshops once you have completed registration.

Doctoral welcome reception

This will take place on Wednesday 02 October 2024 16:00 - 18:30 in the Claverton Rooms.

An opportunity to meet and find out about doctoral groups and networks, find out about central services, hear talks from different members of our University community, network with other new doctoral researchers and enjoy complimentary drinks and refreshments.

Welcome workshops

A series of 5 workshops to help you get started on the essentials. Attendance is expected at these workshops.

These sessions will be followed by an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the topics. Tea and coffee will be served after the in-person sessions.

You should only attend one of the 'Preparing for candidature' sessions.

Preparing for candidature:

This session will provide information and guidance on starting your doctorate programme at the University of Bath. It will also involve guidance on completing your candidature form, and will help you to conduct an initial review of your current and required skills in relation to the Researcher Development Framework (RDF). This will help you to identify which development activities to engage with during your doctorate and what to list on your candidature form.

Establishing expectations in supervision:

Your supervisor is one of the most important resources provided to you by the University to support you to complete your research successfully. Getting the supervisory relationship off to a good start is essential in a doctorate programme, requiring clarification of roles, expectations, responsibilities and behaviours.

Your doctoral career: what, why, when?

Typical career destinations for doctoral students, a likely career ‘timeline’, and important factors in career choice. Ways to develop experience, how to ‘use’ your doctorate to help you navigate career direction, and start to form action plans for career strategizing. An interactive session using peer sharing of ideas and concerns to build a personalised action plan.

An Open Research Landscape: What it means for me, my research and my career

This interactive workshop will cover the main ways of working openly within a doctorate as well as candidly discussing the benefits and challenges doctoral students might encounter.

Ethics

This training session will help you understand, recognise and address ethical dilemmas. You will learn how to apply ethical principles to your own research.

SU 'fresher's week'

As well as these compulsory events, you can also get involved in optional activities run by The SU. These include events specifically for postgraduates, canal cruises, city tours and the Roman Baths. Many of these are free to join.

The Students' Union run regular Doctoral Lunches. This is a opportunity to meet with other doctoral researchers and help yourself to free pizza. The next lunch is Tuesday 01 October, noon to 14:00 in the Postgraduate Learning Commons, 10 West 5.07. Book your place here.
