How to enter 'Bake your Doctorate'
This Guide tells you about eligibility, taking part, judging and rules.
To be eligible to take part in the competition you must be registered for a doctoral degree (PhD or professional doctorate) at the University of Bath.
We can accommodate up to 35 entries to Bake your Doctorate.
To enter, you will need to sign up using the online form by 23:00 on 10 June. You will bring your baked goods with you on 12 June along with a short abstract of your research. The event will last two hours during which time judging will take place.
Professional Doctorate students can take part by submitting a photo and abstract of their entry online in advance. Their entries will be displayed on boards at the event.
Funding can be provided to help cover the cost of ingredients. Up to £20 expenses per entrant could be applied for through an Agresso claim. If you would like to apply for funding, please get in touch.
Categories and Prizes
There are three prize categories:
Doctoral Community Choice (voted for by doctoral students and staff who attend the event)
Professional Doctorate (entries displayed on boards)
There are prizes of £100 Amazon vouchers for each of the winners and £40 Amazon vouchers for each of the runners up.

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:
clear communication of research idea, accessible to a non-specialist audience
clear link between the research abstract provided and baked goods
creative use of baked goods
presentation of baked goods
taste and texture (not valid for Professional Doctorate category)
Competition rules are as follows:
to be eligible to take part in the competition you must be registered for a doctoral degree (PhD or professional doctorate) at the University of Bath
for those entering into the on-campus event, entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis and there is a limit of space
entries will only be accepted if they are accompanied by an abstract of up to 200 words detailing the research topic and/or any findings. For those attending the on-campus event, the abstract should be displayed on the day next to your entry
for entries in the Professional Doctorate category, you must send your abstract and photo of your entry to email@example.com by 11pm (UK time) on 10 June 2018
entries must be baked by the entrant; shop-bought entries are not permitted
entries can include cakes and/or other baked goods (e.g. biscuits, tarts)
a list of allergens in the entry must be clearly displayed next to the entry
for those entering into the on-campus event, each entry must occupy a space of no more than 3ft wide. Multiple baked goods that fit within this space can be accepted
for the Panel’s Choice and Professional Doctorate categories, the panel’s decision is final and there is no right of appeal.
