We offer six levels in French, from Complete Beginner to Advanced.

Complete Beginner

This level is suitable for those who have never studied French before.

At the end of this course you will:

  • have had an introduction to the language (pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar)

  • be confident in talking about every day topics, such as: greetings, nationalities and countries, numbers, shopping, accommodation, travel and directions, everyday life, leisure, house and home

  • have learnt about the culture of the countries where French is spoken

Elementary

Enrol on this course if you:

  • have studied French at Beginner level in the past and would like to consolidate and expand on what you have learnt

  • can recognise the difference between the present and the past tenses

  • can express simple opinions

  • can give an account of your daily routine

  • can write short texts about everyday topics

  • can give advice using the imperative

Lower Intermediate

Enrol in this course if you:

  • have successfully completed the Post Beginner or Elementary levels with us, have a GCSE or are at A1 level in the CEFR

You can also enrol on this course if you:

  • can recognise the difference between the present and the past tense

  • can express simple opinions

  • can give an account of your daily routine

  • can write short texts about everyday topics

  • can give advice using the imperative

Intermediate

Enrol on this course if you:

  • have successfully completed the Lower Intermediate level with us, have an AS level or are at A2 level in the CEFR

You can also enrol on this course if you:

  • can express opinions and engage in conversation on a number of non-abstract topics

  • can understand straightforward written texts on familiar matters such as accommodation and health

  • can use comparatives

  • can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters such as home, family, the environment & health

  • can talk about events which happened in the past using the passé composé and the imperfect tenses

Upper Intermediate

Enrol on this course if you:

  • have successfully completed the Intermediate level with us, have an A level or are at B1 in the CEFR

You can also enrol on this course if you:

  • can navigate comfortably between a wide range of tenses and moods, including the conditional for hypothesis and I know when to use the subjunctive at a basic level

  • can talk or write about topics of personal and general interest such as work, study, leisure

  • can write with a good level of accuracy

  • can speak with reasonably good fluency and without notes

  • can understand the gist and some detail of recorded or broadcast audio material on topics of personal and general interest such as work, study, leisure and on current affairs when the delivery is relatively slow and clear and delivered in standard dialect.

Advanced

Enrol on this course if you:

  • have successfully completed the Upper Intermediate level with us. Alternatively, you should be proficient in French. You might have lived in a French speaking country, for instance, or be at B2/C1 in the CEFR

To enrol on this course, you should:

  • have a very sound knowledge of grammar

  • be able to express yourself reasonably fluently

  • be able to produce extended pieces of writing

  • be able to present an argument convincingly and take part in debates

  • be able to analyse complex texts

  • be able to understand authentic broadcasts

Independent Language Learning
