Course Levels

We offer three levels in Mandarin Chinese, Complete Beginner, Lower Intermediate and Intermediate.

Complete Beginner

Only sign up for this course if you have not studied Mandarin Chinese before. If you are a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and wish to sit in the class please contact the course tutor. You can also become a PAL Leader for our Peer Assisted Learning programme.

By the end of this course you will:

  • have had a brief introduction to the language (pinyin, simple characters and basic grammar)

  • have had an insight on topics such as personal introduction, family etc

  • have had insights on the culture of the places where Mandarin Chinese is spoken

This course will require you to spend 30 minutes a day per week to study independently. If you cannot make this commitment and have little experience of learning a foreign language, we recommend you join our “introduction to Chinese” course, currently only available in Semester 2.

Lower Intermediate

If you have studied Mandarin Chinese before you can try this quick placement test to find out which class would suit your level best. You will need your university login details to take this test.

If you are a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and wish to sit in the class please contact the course tutor. You can also become a PAL Leader for our Peer Assisted Learning programme.

Enrol on this course if you:

  • have some previous knowledge of Mandarin Chinese (completed the Complete Beginner and Post Beginner courses with us and/or passed your HSK Level 1 test and, can read at least 50 simple Chinese characters)

  • can introduce yourself and your family

  • have some knowledge of the culture of places where Mandarin Chinese is spoken

  • can pronounce and write pinyin without difficulty

  • can read and write simple Chinese characters such as numbers, dates and days of the week

  • can talk about where you come from

Intermediate

If you have studied Mandarin Chinese before you can try this quick placement test to find out which class would suit your level best. You will need your university login details to take this test.

If you are a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and wish to sit in the class please contact the course tutor. You can also become a PAL Leader for our Peer Assisted Learning programme.

Enrol on this course if you:

  • have completed the Lower Intermediate level with us and/or have passed your HSK Level 2 test and, can read and write at least 150 Chinese characters

  • can engage in conversation on a number of non-abstract topics such directions and descriptions of places in town

  • can express simple opinions and give advice

  • can understand straightforward written resources on familiar matters

  • can write short texts in Chinese characters related to common topic areas

  • can talk about minor illnesses and treatments

Independent Language Learning

University students or staff members can access independent language learning resources including films, books, and online resources to help you build your knowledge and language skills from the Language Learning Zone.
