Course Levels

We offer four levels in Mandarin Chinese, Introduction to Mandarin, Post Beginner, Lower Intermediate Part 2 and Intermediate Part 2.

Introduction to Mandarin Chinese

By the end of this course you will:

  • have a basic understanding of the Chinese sound system
  • be able to read and write pinyin
  • have a basic understanding of how Chinese characters are formed
  • understand the meaning of some basic components that form Chinese characters
  • know how to type in Chinese using the pinyin input
  • say a few phrases in Mandarin Chinese
  • have knowledge of some aspects of the Chinese culture

Post Beginner

If you have studied Mandarin Chinese before you can try this quick placement test to find out which class would suit your level best. You will need your university login details to take this test.

If you are a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and wish to sit in the class please contact the course tutor. You can also become a PAL Leader for our Peer Assisted Learning programme.

Enrol on this course if you:

  • have completed the Complete Beginner course with FL.

Or if you can:

  • understand the basics of pinyin
  • greet people
  • talk about yourself (age, nationality, occupation)
  • count to 100 and beyond
  • express likes and dislikes
  • talk about basic personal states (e.g. busy, tired, thirst and hungry)
  • read and write at least 30-50 Chinese characters

Lower Intermediate Part 2

If you have studied Mandarin Chinese before you can try this quick placement test to find out which class would suit your level best. You will need your university login details to take this test.

If you are a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and wish to sit in the class please contact the course tutor. You can also become a PAL Leader for our Peer Assisted Learning programme.

Enrol on this course if you:

  • have some previous knowledge of Mandarin Chinese (completed the Lower Intermediate Part 1 course with us and/or achieved HSK 1 and, can read at least 100 simple Chinese characters)

Or if you can:

  • introduce yourself in detail
  • ask and give directions
  • talk about the price of things
  • ask about opening times
  • talk about illnesses and treatment

Intermediate Part 2

If you have studied Mandarin Chinese before you can try this quick placement test to find out which class would suit your level best. You will need your university login details to take this test.

If you are a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and wish to sit in the class please contact the course tutor. You can also become a PAL Leader for our Peer Assisted Learning programme.

Enrol on this course if you:

  • have completed the Lower Intermediate Part 1 level with us and/or have achieved HSK 2 and, can read and write at least 200 Chinese characters

Or if you can:

  • engage in a telephone conversation and know how to leave or take a telephone message
  • describe people and objects in detail
  • shop for clothes and shoes
  • read and understand simple news items
  • write short texts in Chinese characters related to common topic areas
  • understand straightforward written resources on familiar matters

Independent Language Learning

University students or staff members can access independent language learning resources including films, books, and online resources to help you build your knowledge and language skills from the Language Learning Zone.
