Lecturer probation review procedure

This guide will help you to understand the key stages of the probationary procedure for lecturers.

Within the first few weeks of appointment

You will receive a letter from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Provost welcoming you to your new role as well as an email from the Academic Career Progression Team outlining your probationary arrangements, the dates for formal review by Academic Staff Committee (ASC) and details of the Probation Induction Workshop.

The Centre for Learning & Teaching will provide you with information on the Bath Course and an invitation to the induction event for the Bath Course.

Within 1 month of start date

Your Head of Department/Division will meet with you to discuss probationary arrangements, support available and objectives to form the basis of your probationary review. You will also be assigned a mentor.

Within 3 months of start date

The Dean will approve the objectives and forward these to HR. Your mentor will meet with you and agree the mentoring arrangements.

During your probationary period

Your Head of Department/Division will arrange review meetings with you to monitor your progress (a minimum of two meetings per year).

You will need to organise teaching observations. For year 1 and 2, this observation can be done within the Department. For your final review, the observations should be done by an approved senior observer outside your department. The Academic Staff Development team will arrange this for you.

8 weeks before your probationary review date

HR will contact you and your Head of Department/Division to remind you of the deadline for submitting your completed review form to HR.

Between 4 to 8 weeks of your review date

  1. You will need to complete the probationary review form and provide this along with supporting information to your Head of Department/Division. For probationers in their final year, the Head of Department/Division will arrange an independent assessment of your performance by a senior member of the department.

  2. Your Head of Department/Division will complete their sections of the review form and provide this along with the supporting documentation to the Dean for their comment.

  3. The Dean adds their comments to the review form and return to you to add your final comment.

3 weeks before your review date

Your Head of Department/Division will submit the completed review form and supporting documentation to HR. A completed report should consist of;

  • a completed probationary report with final comments by the Head of Department/Division, Dean and yourself

  • Online unit evaluation feedback from SAMIS and/or alternative student feedback

  • your Pure Research Activity Report (with percentage contributions for joint publications added) embedded within the review form

  • teaching observation(s). For final year, and observation must be carried out by a senior observer external to your department independent senior assessment (for final years only)

  • confirmation of completion of the Bath Course (letter or certificate)

Review date

ASC will review the paperwork submitted

1 week after the review date

HR will inform your Head of Department/Division of the outcome of the review, who will then discuss this with you

2 weeks after the review date

You will receive your formal outcome of the review
