The Library recommends the following resources to help you find images, videos and sound recordings to support your work.

General audio-visual resources

You will need to be aware of copyright rules in relation to using images.

Box of Broadcasts National (BoB) Lets you record any broadcast programmes from 60+ TV and radio channels. These are then kept indefinitely and added to a growing media archive with all content shared by users across subscribing institutions - academics can embed links in Moodle and embed clips in presentation.

Creative Commons Search searches across 12 websites for images & other media that you can use, modify & adapt under the Creative Commons license (CC-BY).  Websites include, for example:

  • Pixabay photos: all free to use

  • Wikimedia Commons click on an image to find out about terms of use and referencing requirements 

TED video talks given by Isabelle Allende, Gordon Brown, Henry Markram, Steven Pinker & many others - debates on science, technology, design, business, culture & global issues

Xpert covers broad discipline range - click on an image to find out in which ways you're permitted to use it - all images should be attributed.

Architecture & Civil Engineering: audiovisual & image resources

ARKive promoted by Sir David Attenborough: contains images, videos & information on the natural world & endangered species  

British Cartoon Archive over 9,000 images: under copyright to the creators but the British Cartoon Society will facilitate researchers & mediate with copyright owners 

British Library Sounds sound recordings including public debates, radio, music recordings; art, design & architecture interviews 

oral history Also includes an oral history collection; sound recordings & images of British life in the 20th century, covering such social issues such as disability, ethnicity, families, health, immigration, politics & religion. 

  • Permissions: members of the University are allowed, for educational purposes, to save and incorporate sections in VLEs or print/e-course packs in a secure environment, with full acknowledgement of the source & copyright owner. For public display or performance of any part (e.g. conference or seminar), a public performance licence for the specific work(s) is required. License limits access to users in the UK.

British Museum if you register with the British Museum, you can use images that are not covered by current copyright terms, and for a wide range of purposes e.g. images from artists that are either alive or have not yet been dead for a 70 or more years - for more information, refer to terms of use

Casselman Archive of Islamic and Mudejar Spain over 4,000 images of architecture, spanning the 7th to 17th centuries

Cell Image Library a "public repository of reviewed and annotated images, videos, and animations of cells from a variety of organisms" - also features  animations of cells from a variety of organisms showing their architecture, intracellular functionalities and both their normal & abnormal processes

MIT Video computing & psychology 

NASA on the Commons high quality images of significant historical interest scanned at high resolution in several sizes - collection intended for the media, publishers & the public - you must reference the copyright holder for any images you use in reports or assignments 

NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) includes the NIX Collection of citations, images, films & videos - images are generally available for educational purposes but please check the copyright statement relating to each image
