Pathway to Bath - BTEC

Overview

The BTEC strands of the Pathway to Bath programme will run February to December and will support students to make a strong application to the University of Bath.

Throughout the year students will have online activities every 2 weeks that will take 2-3 hours to complete. Students will also undertake a project based on the Maths knowledge built during the BTEC course and get support with Maths content. They will also get direct access to current university students who will guide them through the process of choosing and applying to university. Students on the programme will be assigned an e-mentor who is a current student at Bath studying a relevant subject.

Engineering

“How does the geometry of a simple (beam) bridge influence the Strength to Weight Ratio”

Using Maths skills developed throughout the programme and your A level Maths course, students undertaking the Engineering stream will carry out a project to identify the geometrical factors which control the strength of a bridge and create a design with the maximum Strength v Weight Ratio.

Each session will support you with the process of designing your own research and give you the relevant knowledge you will need to successfully undertake your research. We will link the content to the work you will be undertaking on your BTEC Engineering course.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Engineering strand of Pathway to Bath you must meet our Widening Participation criteria and be studying an Engineering BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma and an A level in Mathematics. You must also be academically able to study one of the (Electronic and Electrical, Civil, Chemical or Mechanical) engineering courses at Bath.

IT

“Using the language ‘Python’ create a dynamic graphic with at least four images”

Using Maths skills developed throughout the programme and your AS or A level Maths course, students undertaking the IT and Computing stream will undertake a project to design and build (from scratch) a dynamic graphic using ‘Python’.

Each session will support you with the learning of Python Language and give you the necessary Maths knowledge you will need to successfully undertake your project. We will link the content to the work you will be undertaking on your BTEC IT or Computing course.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the IT strand of Pathway to Bath you must meet our Widening Participation criteria and be studying IT or Computing BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma and an AS or A level in Mathematics. You must also be academically able to study one of the Computer Science courses at Bath.

Sport and Exercise Science

“What is the probability that World and Olympic Records can be accurately predicted from previous records?”

Using Maths skills developed throughout the programme students undertaking the Sport and Exercise Science stream will undertake a project to predict future World and Olympic records based on previous records.

Each session will support you with the process of designing your own research and give you the necessary Maths knowledge you will need to successfully undertake your project. We will link the content to the work you will be undertaking on your BTEC Sport and Exercise Science.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Sport and Exercise strand of Pathway to Bath you must meet our Widening Participation criteria and be studying Sport and Exercise BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma. You must also be academically able to study one of the Sport, Exercise or Health courses at Bath.
