When award ceremonies are held

Check the University's latest updates and guidance relating to Coronavirus (COVID19)

Award Ceremonies are held by the University of Bath twice a year, once in the winter just before the Christmas break, and once in the summer, around July.

Eligibility to attend

If you've achieved one of the following awards you'll be invited to attend an award ceremony:

  • A Foundation Degree
  • A First degree, which are those called “Bachelor of …” or, for undergraduate masters’ degrees, “Master of …”, or "Master in ..."
  • A Higher degree, which are those called “Doctor of …”, and postgraduate degrees called “Masters of …”

You won’t attend a University of Bath ceremony if you’ve been awarded a Certificate of Higher Education, Diploma of Higher Education, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, or if your course is "validated" or "licenced" by the University of Bath.

Registering to attend

If you’re scheduled to graduate in the summer we'll email an invitation to you around the middle of March, asking you to register for your ceremony. If you’re scheduled to graduate in the winter we'll email an invitation to you in October.

The invitation email will direct you to an online form on SAMIS, where you'll be able to:

  • confirm whether or not you'll be coming to the ceremony
  • request guest tickets - see our guide Getting guest tickets for your graduation award ceremony for more information about how we allocate tickets for the ceremonies
  • let us know about any accessibility arrangements you'll need to arrange with us for guests with a disability
  • make arrangements for your certificate to be sent to you, if you decide not to attend your ceremony. You’ll still have to complete the form to tell us you’re not coming.

Deadline for registration

The email we send you will confirm the deadline for completing the form. If you don’t complete registration by the deadline you may not be able to attend your graduation ceremony.

Completing registration

Once registration is open and you've received the email, you'll be asked to:

  1. Log in to SAMIS
  2. Access the form called ‘Graduation Ceremony’
  3. Confirm that you'll attend
  4. Confirm the correct name to appear on your degree certificate - see our guide Getting your certificate
  5. Tell us how many guest tickets you would like (a maximum of two per student is guaranteed – see our guide Getting guest tickets for your graduation award ceremony for more information about how we allocate tickets for the ceremonies)
  6. Tell us if you or your guests have any special requirements for the day
  7. Tell us if you would like to request extra guest tickets

You'll be able to change your details at any point before the deadline.

Letting us know that you won’t attend

You’ll be asked to use the form to tell us if you don’t want to attend your ceremony and to confirm how you’d like to receive your degree certificate.

Once registration is open and you've received the email, you’ll be asked to:

  1. Log in to SAMIS
  2. Access the form called ‘Graduation Ceremony’
  3. Confirm that you will not attend
  4. Confirm the correct name to appear on your degree certificate
  5. Tell us how you would like to receive your degree certificate - see our guide Getting your certificate

Deferring attendance to a future ceremony

You're only eligible to attend the ceremony immediately after your award has been approved. You're not able to choose which time of year you graduate.

If you can demonstrate that you have an exceptional circumstance that means you cannot attend your ceremony, you can make a request to defer to a future ceremony by contacting us. Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis. A place at a future ceremony is not guaranteed. Please note that we do not class summer jobs, internships or holidays as exceptional circumstances.

Graduation receptions

Your School or department may invite you to a special reception, to celebrate your achievements with your fellow graduates, which will take place at a venue, on campus or in the city, on the day of your graduation.

These receptions will happen at a specific time before or after your award ceremony and separate tickets may be allocated to you. These tickets should not be confused with your graduation ceremony tickets or your guest tickets, and you should build in extra time to your graduation day itinerary if you plan to attend a departmental reception.

For more information about the venues and timings for your departmental reception please contact your School or Department.
