The Department of Physics at the University of Bath invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in time domain astrophysics.

The successful applicant will work with members of the Bath Astrophysics Group (http://www.bath.ac.uk/physics/research/astrophysics/) whose research interests cover  observational and theoretical time-domain astrophysics, including high energy astrophysical theory, rapid follow-up of transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts, Fast Radio Bursts, Gravitaitonal Wave events, polarimetry, AGN variability, and variable stars.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates with multiwavelength experience in the study of high-energy transients, such as GRBs, and an interest in development and exploitation of real-time, autonomous systems. Experience of working at optical and radio wavelengths and an interest in exploiting massive datasets from facilities such as LSST, SKA and JCMT, in which Bath Astrophysics is currently involved, is desirable. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to participate in development/commissioning of new polarization instrumentation/related software that the group is currently developing.

Members of the Bath Astrophysics Group have privileged access to the University's high-performance computer cluster (http://www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/services/hpc/), have the opportunity to attend regular seminars and colloquia, and hold weekly group meetings where topics on time domain astrophysics are discussed alongside scientific developments in the wider field.

Applicants should hold a PhD in astrophysics (or related discipline) before taking up the position (nominally October 2018, but earlier starting dates are possible). The appointment is offered for a period of up to 36 months. As a member of the Bath Astrophysics Group, the successful applicant will be provided with excellent support for their research including access to travel, computing, career development and training.

The Department and the University are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment. Women and under-represented minorities are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should upload a letter of application, Curriculum Vitae, brief statement of research interests (maximum 2 pages) and provide the names of two referees.

For informal enquiries about the role, please contact Professor Carole Mundell (Head of Department) on +44 1225 385 579 or email c.g.mundell@bath.ac.uk
