This is an exciting opportunity to develop and apply your skills in data science to support the emergence of Open Source Hardware (OSH) as a mature alternative to conventional closed source product development.

The appointment is for a full-time Research Associate on a 5.9M€ EU-funded Programme Grant starting in September 2019 and bringing together 19 partners from 7 countries. This Grant entitled “Open!Next” aims to develop an infrastructure of IT solutions and services enabling Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to engage in company-community collaboration to drive co-development and market exploitation of OSH products. The research programme is tightly linked with practice through the participation of numerous businesses, grassroots initiatives and services companies.

The Research Associate will support this exciting new research by applying their skills in data science to investigate the phenomenon of co-development in OSH projects. They will implement a “digital archaeology” approach to design science by investigating co-development through the digital traces left by project contributors on collaborative software tools such as Git. Contributions to the field may lie in the development of data science approaches to the analysis of OSH projects and the identification of emergent patterns in OSH projects that can be post-processed to determine best practice. This will lead to the development of tools, recommender systems, guidelines and/or processes to support these communities.

The Research Associate will also be instrumental in developing a data-driven status report dashboard for OSH projects as part of the deliverables of the project. Developed as an add-on to Git-based online platforms, this dashboard will extract and process data in order to provide communities and businesses with key indicators of OSH project wealth.

The appointed person will join the internationally leading Advanced Design & Manufacturing Group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath. In this stimulating research environment, they will get support to engage in wider activities and to consolidate their academic profile. Additional opportunities will be given to participate in related research activities performed by the Department within and outside the frame of the interdisciplinary project team.

Applicants are expected to show a strong track record in data science, programming, modelling or related topics. Experience or background knowledge in engineering design or design science is also desirable. Since the project involves strong collaboration with industrial and academic partners, experience of working effectively in an interdisciplinary environment will be beneficial.

This role is a 3-year fixed-term contract ideally starting September 2019.  It is a full time role (36.5 hours) but flexible working can be considered. The successful candidate should hold a PhD degree.
