Apprentice Gardener & Groundsperson

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge to enable the successful applicant to undertake landscape and grounds maintenance through an apprenticeship with Wiltshire College and practical experience at the University of Bath.

This will include a mixture of workplace and college training over a period of 12 to 18 months which will enable them to gain the knowledge, skills and competencies to safely undertake the following tasks and responsibilities:

Carry out seasonal work to grass, formal and informal planted areas and woodland to ensure that the University grounds are attractive, safe and tidy

Learn to safely use:

  • ride on mowers 
  • trailed gang units 
  • tractors (with trailers including gritting machine) 
  • 4 X 4 vehicles / pickups
  • flat bed and panel vans 
  • hand operated horticultural machinery 

Maintain grass sports pitches and artificial sports surfaces such as sand/water based astro and 3G pitches, acrylic and clay tennis courts and athletic running track

The team maintain the upkeep of the borders, grassed areas, woodlands, planting, preparation and upkeep of outdoor natural and artificial sports surfaces and other facilities for sports fixtures and recreational use.

As part of the apprenticeship Wiltshire College will provide the following training:

  • L2 NVQ Diploma in Horticulture
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Functional Skills (English and Maths) if required

This role is very rewarding and enjoyable. Please be aware that it is mostly based outdoors at all times of year and can be physically demanding in line with the requirements of the job.

The successful candidate will join the Landscape Team at one of the UK's top university's with a fantastic reputation for the beauty of its grounds and the quality of its sports pitches. The Landscape Team are a part of the Department of Estates, which is responsible for the development, upkeep and management of all the University's land and buildings.    Their upkeep is a vital part of the University of Bath’s reputation for exceptional student experience.
