Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Applied and Numerical Mathematics

We are looking to enhance and extend our current strengths in the modern applications of mathematics, numerical analysis and scientific computing and would welcome your application if you have experience working in one of the following areas:

  • numerical analysis
  • scientific computing
  • data science (including inverse problems, signal/image processing, machine learning and optimisation)
  • mathematical biology
  • continuum mechanics
  • networks
  • stochastic and deterministic modelling
  • applied dynamical systems
  • industrial applications of mathematics

We wish to appoint two positions and we welcome candidates whose research might overlap several of these areas.

About you

You should be able to demonstrate your potential for achieving and sustaining a leading research programme, and to be active in developing and submitting competitive applications for external funding. You should also have a commitment to pursuing excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and in supervising graduate students.

Alongside completion of the online application form, please upload:

  • A full Curriculum Vitae
  • A statement of research interests of up to three pages, also explaining how your work would strengthen existing activity at Bath
  • A one-page summary of teaching experience and strategy

Applications from all groups currently under-represented in academic posts are particularly encouraged. We are working to improve the present gender balance within the Department, and particularly welcome applications from women. Both the Department and the University are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment and both hold Athena Swan Silver awards. Flexible working options including part-time will be considered wherever possible. For more information visit http://www.bath.ac.uk/hr/working/flexible-working/.

About the department

The Department of Mathematical Sciences has over 70 academic staff from all areas of Mathematics, and is ranked in the top 100 in the world. Through joining us, you will be part of the Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics (AIMS) or the Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing (NASC) research group.

Our Department emphasises the unity of Mathematics and there are strong interactions between all research groups: AIMS, NASC, Probability (ProbL@B), Statistics, Analysis and PDEs and Algebra Geometry and Number Theory (AGENT). Impact is achieved through a wide variety of interdisciplinary research projects, and industrial collaborations.

These activities are supported by the Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics at Bath (SAMBa), which has currently over 80 PhD students. In addition, the Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation (IMI), promotes, and supports, cross-campus research activities, industrial, and international collaborations, in all areas of mathematics and statistics. Various research centres such as the Centre for Mathematical Biology (CMB), the Centre for Mathematics and Algorithms for Data (MAD), the Centre for Networks and Collective Behaviour (CNCB), and the Centre for Nonlinear Mechanics (CNM), provide focus in interdisciplinary collaborations.

What we can offer you:

Our campus is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the City of Bath with its historic charm and social activity only a short distance away creates an excellent environment in which to work. We are:

  • a family friendly workplace
