An exciting short-term opportunity for an Instrument Specialist in Bio-Electron Microscopy has arisen within the Material and Chemical Characterisation facility (MC2). You will be responsible for providing expert advice and support in the analysis of biological samples using the following key techniques:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM+EDX)
  • Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM)
  • Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)
  • Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM)

As well as providing expert advice and support, the Instrument Specialist will contribute to user training of undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers from across the University of Bath, and maintenance of the full range of microscopy instruments.

The successful candidate will have significant experience of analysing biological samples using the microscopy techniques listed above, ideally with a background of providing a microscopy service to a diverse user base working in a range of research areas.

The microscopy service is a key part of a larger multidisciplinary team who provide analysis and characterisation of chemical, biological and physical materials for researchers and students from across the University of Bath, and beyond. MC2 includes over 50 instruments encompassing mass spectrometry, NMR, X-ray diffraction, thermal, surface and elemental analysis, electron microscopy and bio-imaging. Key to the functioning of this large facility are our team of 14 instrument specialists and technicians, and the successful applicant will become a key, and supported, member of this dynamic group of technical experts.

This is a full-time role (36.5 hours per week) to cover maternity leave until June 2022.
