We are looking for a post-doctoral researcher to be part of the Mp2 IB Catalyst project.

The project is a large academic and industrial partnership aimed at producing a palm oil substitute from a yeast cultured on lignocellulosic residue. Previous work in the consortia has demonstrated that the yeast Metschnikowia pulcherrima can be cultured inexpensively under non-sterile conditions, producing a range of products including a palm oil substitute and protein substitute. We have further demonstrated that M pulcherrima can be cultured on lignocellulose hydrolysate produced using a novel low-energy, one-step microwave process. In the overall project the microwave processing of biomass is being developed, the directed evolution and genetic transformation of the unique strain of yeast is underway and the fermentation has been demonstrated on the 2L and pilot scale batch processes.

About the role

Within this team the suitable candidate will aid in the scale up of the yeast process, working on the continuous fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates on the 2L and pilot scale. In addition to joining the Mp2 team, the successful candidate will join a vibrant research group within Chemical Engineering. The research will be expected to help develop a truly sustainable process on the industrial scale by demonstrating the enhanced production of the yeast while also contributing to the wider research community both nationally and internationally.

About you

Applicants should hold a relevant degree and PhD, in biochemical engineering and have experience in scaling yeast processes.

Benefits

  • You will also be entitled to a very generous 19.5% employer contributory pension (8.8% employee contributions) as well as the following employee benefits:
  • 39 days holiday pro-rata, (annual leave, discretionary days and bank holidays)
  • A flexible working environment
  • Ofsted outstanding rated onsite nursery
  • Salary exchange scheme (cycle to work)
  • Interest-free loans for public transport seasons tickets and motorcycle purchases for commuting
  • Onsite private and NHS dentist, onsite medical centre
  • Discounted physiotherapy service

This is a fixed term role ideally starting near the end of September for approximately 6 months.
