The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering wishes to appoint two outstanding and inspirational academics in structural engineering design. These Lecturer (Assistant Professor) positions, are intended to underpin our research leadership focussing on the global challenge of zero-carbon design. Candidates will have a scholarly reputation, demonstrated by a significant record of high quality journal publications in the one of the following fields of structural engineering design:

  • Digital structural design and/or manufacturing (e.g. parametric design, additive manufacturing, topology optimisation, form-finding)
  • Data driven structural design
  • Innovative structural applications of natural materials (e.g. innovative timber construction).

We are not seeking applicants whose primary research focus is finite element modelling/analysis (except to support the research areas above) or earthquake engineering, but rather someone who will complement and grow our existing research areas. Please click here to see the Department's research.

You will be expected to develop, largely through external funding, a research team in your specialist area. We would generally expect applicants to have some post-doctoral experience.

The post holder is expected to make a significant contribution to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, with a dedication to the delivery of high quality teaching across a range of subjects within the broad area of structural and architectural engineering. The emphasis is on use of computational tools to facilitate design, such as parametric modelling, multi-objective optimisation and form-finding.

The Department at the University of Bath is internationally recognised as a leading centre for research and teaching in the built environment. The Department came joint top in the Architecture, Built Environment and Planning unit of assessment in the 2014 REF and we are consistently at the top of the league tables. The University has received a Gold award in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

We are a joint Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering in which collaborative, integrated studio based design is central to our teaching ethos. A passion for creative engineering design and integrated/collaborative working is an essential requirement. Some experience of practical engineering design and chartered status would also be beneficial. Other duties will depend upon the background of the post holders.

All applicants must include both a Curriculum Vitae and a two-page outline of their future plans and intentions for research activity and grant capture over the coming five years. This document will be treated in the strictest confidence and with full respect for ownership. This is a mandatory component of the selection process, without which we will be unable to progress your application.

We positively encourage applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, or pregnancy and maternity.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Stephen Emmitt (+44 (0)1225 384722, email S.Emmitt@bath.ac.uk), Head of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering; or Dr Antony Darby (+44 (0)1225 383182, email A.P.Darby@bath.ac.uk), Head of Civil Engineering.

The closing date for this job opportunity has now passed, and applications are no longer being accepted for this position
