The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering in collaboration with the Institute for Mathematical innovation (IMI) at the University of Bath invites applications from excellent candidates in applied mathematical sciences.

We are hiring a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to work on the ZED-I: Zero Peak Energy Building Design for India project.

This post is part of a larger project with the potential to make a lasting impact on the lives of millions of people. The project’s vision is to decouple building energy use from economic growth in developing countries through a new science of Zero Peak Energy Building Design for warm climates, with a large developing country as a case study. The key objective, therefore, is to provide ‘thermal stress free' living conditions whilst minimising mean and peak demand.

This post is to process Met Office weather model output covering the entire land surface of this country, into typical, probabilistic, and extreme weather files of the correct format for integration with the rest of the project. These will then be used to investigate building designs produced by other team members. This will also require the production of an online portal to provide these on-demand.

The post holder should have good knowledge of computer programming - ideally Python - for applying statistical and mathematical analysis techniques. Knowledge of database creation and maintenance will also be highly advantageous.

This post is full time (36.5 hours per week) and is offered on a full-time fixed-term basis for a period of 11 months from the employment start date.

Alongside completion of the online application form, it is essential that candidates upload:

  • Full Curriculum Vitae
  • Statement of research expertise and their experience working with researchers from non-mathematical science disciplines

You will join the EDEn (Energy and Design of Environments) research group within the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, but work closely with our co-investigators in India. For more information on EDEn please click here

We positively encourage applications from suitably qualified and eligible candidates regardless of sex, race, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief, marital status, or pregnancy and maternity.

For an informal discussion about the position please contact Dr Sukumar Natarajan ( or Prof. David Coley (
