We are seeking a post-doctoral Research Associate to work within our advanced manufacturing processes and systems (AMPS) research team on the CNC finish machining of additively manufactured parts. The work is part of a new 3 year ATi IUK funded project on wire-arc additive manufacturing processes with Airbus and other UK industrial and academic partners. This project seeks to use direct energy deposition additive metal processes and finishing processes to produce the next generation of aerospace parts.

Based in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, AMPS is a leading research team focused on theoretical, experimental and analytical research into manufacturing processes and systems. AMPS has an excellent track record in delivering industry-relevant projects, and has long established collaborations with industrial partners. This collaboration covers a range of industries from medical to aerospace with research projects and industrial links throughout the supporting supply chains.

Applicants should possess PhD degree in subject area of direct relevance for the project, or equivalent significant relevant experience and professional qualification, and have research experience. Applicants must have experience of CNC machining of metal parts, ideally produced by additive manufacturing and particularly directed energy deposition processes. Experience of delivery and involvement in major collaborative research programmes such as Innovate UK or Horizon 2020 consortia would also be highly beneficial. Candidates should be self-motivated and possess project management and technical communication skills.

This position is full time (36.5 hours per week) and is being offered on a fixed term contract basis for 7 months from the 1st June 2020 until 31st December.
