An exciting project, funded by Innovate UK, is referred to as ‘Enhanced Low Cost Automation Technology’ (ELCAT). It will advance the manufacturing technology and capabilities relating to aerospace structures, to meet the future demands of increased production rates with manufacturing precision. 

The increasing use of composite and metallic components provides challenges in the integration of these components with the desired precision (microns) that is critical for structural integrity and energy efficient operation of an aircraft. Additionally, flexibility in the manufacturing process is required to meet the anticipated production rates, which will require less dependence on jig fixtures. To achieve these challenging targets, a higher level of automation is required in the use of robots, motion platforms, metrology instruments, and integrated control. ELCAT partners include GKN Aerospace (the industry lead), Exechon (an industrial manufacturer of parallel kinematic machines), and the Universities of Bath and Nottingham. 

The role of the Research Associate at Bath is to undertake research into CFD/FEA analysis of machining processes under supercritical CO2 lubrication and cooling, including swarf/particulate removal. Nozzle design will be a feature. Also, experimental validation will be required and supported. In addition, the successful applicant must also be aware of the wider aims of the ELCAT project, hence there will be significant engagement and communication with the other partners.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering undertakes internationally leading research across many areas. Specifically, the Centre for Power Transmission and Motion Control leads in fluid power, CFD/FEA, actuation, robotics control, and the dynamics and control of electro-mechanical systems

This role is fixed term from 1 September 2021 with an expected end date of 28 February 2023.
