Are you interested in the Earth's mesosphere, lower thermosphere, and ionosphere (MLTI)?  

We are looking for a Research Associate to study this critical boundary region linking the atmosphere below and space above.

About the project

The MLTI is by far the least-understood part of the atmospheric system, and our knowledge of how it varies over time and space is very limited. To improve our understanding of MLTI dynamics and hence our ability to forecast terrestrial and space weather, NERC has funded the £2.3m MesoS2D (mesospheric subseasonal-to-decadal predictability) project. MesoS2D is a multi-institution programme which will use novel observations and cutting-edge atmospheric models to characterise and understand the MLTI system over Scandinavia, a key testbed region covered by a wide and diverse range of measurement platforms.

About the role

Working with colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey, the University of Leeds and the US National Center for Atmospheric Research, you will use NASA and ESA satellites to measure the effects on the Scandinavian MLTI of small-scale atmospheric ('gravity') waves, and examine these measurements to identify the signatures of phenomena such as local and regional weather, the output of the sun, El Nino and the Madden-Julian Oscillation. You will compare these observed effects to simulations run using the leading WACCM weather model, and to ionospheric data from the state-of-the-art EISCAT-3D radar which will start operating in Scandinavia from 2022 onwards. The ultimate goal of MesoS2D is to drive a step-change in our knowledge of and ability to predict the MLTI, and you will play a key role in delivering this goal.

About you

  • A PhD degree in subject area of direct relevance for the project, or equivalent significant relevant experience and professional qualification
  • An awareness of latest developments in atmospheric dynamics and in research design
  • Be able to demonstrate scientific programming capabilities
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal and written communication skills

About the team

You will join a thriving atmospheric dynamics research group led by Dr Wright, and work with colleagues studying topics as diverse as the triggering of dramatic sudden stratospheric warming events, ways to improve the accuracy of state-of-the-art weather models, and identifying techniques to better predict extreme hurricanes and typhoons. You will have the opportunity to contribute to these projects and others as well as your core work on MesoS2D. This will take places within the broader context of the University's Centre for Space, Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, the work of which spans the Earth system from the oceans to the edge of space and from theory to application, and within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, which in addition to strengths across electrical engineering includes specialists in remote sensing and upper-atmospheric science.
