The Department of Mechanical Engineering requires is looking for a highly skilled, adaptable and self- motivated Technician / Skilled Machinist to provide technical support to the Aerospace Engineering Research Centre and the Advanced Composites Centre.

About the role:

You will be responsible for providing technical advice and support to academic and research staff in the composites and aerospace workshops and laboratories. You will be proficient in the safe operation and use of composite materials and be proficient in the use of a variety of mechanical workshop machine tools. The team also provide skills in welding/fabrication in steel, stainless steel and aluminium together with bench fitting and assembly. You will also be responsible for giving technical advice and assistance with the design of, and for the manufacture and maintenance of, specialist rigs, equipment and components using a wide range of workshop and laboratory equipment.

About you:

You should ideally have served a recognised mechanical engineering apprenticeship, possess a minimum of a City and Guilds qualification or equivalent and have substantial experience of working in an engineering, laboratory or toolroom environment.

  • Examine, understand and assess relevant scientific and technology information, concepts and ideas and to suggest solutions to problems
  • Be responsible for safe working practices whilst contributing to their evaluation and improvement
  • Show willingness to contribute to your own continuous performance improvement
  • Communicate effectively with a broad range of audiences

Previous experience of working with composite materials, aero structures, wind tunnels, autoclaves and instrumentation would be an advantage, but training will be provided where necessary to the successful applicant.
