The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath is internationally recognised as a leading centre for research and teaching in the built environment. The Department came joint top in the Architecture, Built Environment and Planning unit of assessment in the 2014 REF and we are consistently at the top of the league tables. The University has received a Gold award in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

The Department wishes to appoint an outstanding and inspirational academic in the area of structural engineering design. The post is advertised at Lecturer (Assistant Professor) level. The successful candidate will have a scholarly reputation, demonstrated by a significant record of high quality journal publications in the relevant field. You will be expected to develop, largely through external funding, a research team in your specialist area. We would generally expect applicants for Lecturer level to have some post-doctoral experience. The successful candidate will be developing a reputation in one of the following fields of structural engineering design:

  • Digital structural design and/or manufacturing (e.g. parametric design, additive manufacturing, structural optimisation, form-finding etc.)
  • Data driven structural design
  • Innovative architectural structures
  • Innovative structural applications of natural materials

We are not currently seeking applicants whose primary research focus is finite element modelling/analysis (except to support the research areas above) or earthquake engineering, but rather someone who will complement and grow our existing research areas. The post holder is expected to make a significant contribution to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. We are therefore looking for someone with a dedication to the delivery of high quality teaching across a range of subjects within the broad area of structural and architectural engineering, with an emphasis on use of computational tools to facilitate design, such as parametric modelling, multi-objective optimisation and form-finding. 

We are a joint Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering in which collaborative, integrated studio based design is central to our teaching ethos. A passion for creative engineering design and integrated/collaborative working is an essential requirement. Some experience of practical engineering design and chartered status would also be beneficial. Other duties will depend upon the background of the post holders.
