The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Bath is seeking to make an appointment in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) related to Automotive Propulsion Systems. The post-holder is to conduct high-impact research, provide excellent postgraduate research supervision, and deliver high-quality teaching.

Propulsion systems are becoming ever more complex and are subject to increasing expectations around performance, sustainability and reliability. These pressures risk extending product development cycles at a point where there is intense commercial pressure to reduce the time taken. There is an urgent requirement for more effective use of data, knowledge and analytical techniques at all stages in the product lifecycle. The vision is to leverage a highly-connected future to harness data and knowledge describing the system from all possible sources. New techniques are needed to organise this information and to combine these insights with physical models of the system to form a high-fidelity digital twin. This is a key requirement to allow faster and better product development.

The Department is looking for an individual currently working in the fields of data science, AI techniques applied to engineering problems and/or virtual product engineering. Significant experience of using these techniques in the automotive propulsion sector, as an academic or industrial practitioner, would be an advantage.

This position will form part of the creation of the new £70m Institute of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) which is currently undergoing development and is intended to be one of the top three sites in the world for advanced propulsion systems research. It builds on 40 years of continuous propulsion research at the University and recently an EPSRC Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT) was secured providing 86 fully funded PhD students over the next five years.  The current automotive team has an excellent track record in delivering industry-relevant projects, and has long-established collaborations with industrial partners. This is an exciting opportunity to join an expanding research group which is receiving substantial investment from Government, the Automotive Industries and the University

The applicant will be expected to contribute to the teaching of the current MSc in Automotive Engineering as well as the design and delivery of a new suite of postgraduate courses which addresses the future technology directions of the automotive industries.

Applicants must provide a two-page summary of your expertise and interests to deliver appropriate research and teaching.

The University of Bath is situated on a modern campus surrounded by attractive countryside overlooking the centre of Bath, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage City, famous for its Georgian architecture, and its annual literature and music festivals. It is a safe and friendly campus with strong student services and excellent sports facilities. Bath is located 100 miles west of London and is easily accessible by air, road and rail.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering holds a Silver Award for Athena SWAN scheme, which promotes gender equality among all disciplines. We particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups.

The role is offered on a full-time basis (36.5 hours/week).

Informal enquiries about the post may be made to either Professor Gary Lock, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tel: +44 (0)1225 386854 (g.d.lock@bath.ac.uk) or Professor Marcelle McManus, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tel: +44 (0)1225 386854 (M.McManus@bath.ac.uk).
