The Department of Social & Policy Sciences at the University of Bath wishes to appoint a Research Associate to take the lead on analysis of the German Socio-Economic Panel and linked employee-employer panel data (LIAB, LEEP-3), and the German part of a field experiment, under the European Research Council-funded project, NEWFAMSTRAT.  NEWFAMSTRAT aims to provide new insights into stratification between and among women and men at individual, couple, and employer levels in Finland, Germany, and the UK. The research is organised around four comparative subprojects, three of which entail coordinated analyses of large-scale panel and/or administrative data and one of which is a coordinated field correspondence study.  The postholder will be directly responsible for preparing working hypotheses and appropriate analyses related to Germany in particular, and in conjunction with the other two countries. This includes producing independent and collaborative publications, conference presentations, and materials for public dissemination. 

The successful candidate must have a PhD in a subject area of direct relevance to this project. Training and expertise in analysing large-scale longitudinal data sets is absolutely essential, as are very strong data management and quantitative analysis skills and proficiency in using STATA.  Experience with managing and analysing linked employee-employer panel or administrative/register data is preferred. Working knowledge of day-to-day German is essential, as is fluency in English. Candidates should have a developing track record of publications in highly-ranked academic journals.

The post provides a particularly outstanding opportunity for a skilled quantitative researcher to contribute to advancing our theoretical understanding of stratification at the intersection of gender and class, potentially providing new insights for policy makers to strengthen EU equality legislation.   The postholder will join a collegial department that was ranked fifth in the Social Policy and Social Work unit of assessment in the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise. The post is full-time on a fixed-term contract, which cannot extend beyond 31 July 2021; however the start date is somewhat flexible. The position includes some travel, perhaps including some extended visits in Germany.
