Do you want to use and develop your analytical and decision-making skills?

Are you open, objective and good at listening to others?

Are you able to maintain confidentiality at all times and act with discretion?

Would you like to become involved in an important, impartial service provided to students and the University?

We are looking to form a pool of skilful appeal hearers, from which panels of three can be drawn to consider individual cases. Voluntary appeal panel members will also be called upon to determine whether a student appeal submission meets the criteria to be considered by an appeal panel. Appeals are an important part of our procedures to ensure the decisions made are fair, consistent, timely and improve the student experience.

About the role:

The University of Bath is fully committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive working and learning environment, where difference is celebrated and seen as a strength and where all members of the University community have mutual respect for each other. The University has a clear commitment to safeguarding which is the overarching term used to describe the protection of the health, wellbeing and human rights of individuals as well as the systems, policies and cultures through which the University keeps students safe from harm and respond when incidents occur. As a voluntary appeal panel member, you will use your keen eye for detail and sound decision-making skills to contribute to our commitment to safeguarding individuals within the University of Bath community.

You will give careful consideration to each individual student appeal based on the evidence given at the hearing and prior written submissions. You will contribute equally to the decision-making along with the other panel members by critically analysing the decision-making that has taken place at the previous stage, ensuring compliance with internal and external processes and procedures.

Panels will hear appeals from students against decisions made under the University Student Discipline, Fitness to Study, Fitness to Practise and Student Complaints policies. The appeals panel may be used in relation to other policies where it is appropriate and reasonable to do so.

Further information:

This is a voluntary role and you do not need to have specific knowledge on how appeals work or any previous experience in education as full training and support will be provided. The number of appeals received within an academic year varies and so the number of hours which you are called for will differ, but the time commitment is expected to be approximately 1-3 days per year for casework (actual hearings plus pre-reading/preparation) and an additional approximate three days per year for training (in-person and remote). To apply for this position, you must not have a relative who is currently studying at the University of Bath (including PhD students). If you believe you may have a different conflict of interest just let us know as we will review these on a case by case basis.

This is an unpaid, voluntary role but agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed.

If you are interested in this opportunity please send a CV and short covering letter exploring your interest and suitability to governance@bath.ac.uk.

To apply for this position you cannot be employed by the University of Bath or have a relative who is currently studying here (including PhD students). If you are employed at the University of Bath and are interested in the Appeals Panel, you can apply through this advert: https://www.bath.ac.uk/jobs/XX10906
