Debbie Pye Applications Adviser

One-to-one application advice appointments for feedback on applications and CVs. Practice interviews and interview coaching sessions

Role

  • I advise and support students and graduates who want help with developing and tailoring their CVs, cover letters, personal statements and application forms. It’s not always easy to showcase your results, skills and experience without thinking that you are 'boasting'….but making a job application is not the time to be modest! It’s my job to help you present your amazing academic and work achievements in a factual and compelling way which makes you feel comfortable and proud.
  • I run bespoke Practice Interviews and Interview Coaching sessions which enable you to build your interview competence and confidence before you do the real thing.
  • I write blogs for the Careers Service about things like how to write strong bullet points for CVs, managing your boss while you’re on placement and how to make sure algorithms and virtual interviews don’t trip you up.

Career

My background is in management consultancy (Big 4) specialising in leadership and organisation development. I qualified at Master's level as an executive coach and I have been running my own leadership consulting business for many years, coaching and developing business people around the world to be amazing leaders ….and enjoy the process. I still run my business but now also work part-time in the Careers Service, which is a really rewarding combination of roles.

The best aspect of my job here is the opportunity to meet such a huge range of talented students and graduates and to hear their stories and aspirations. It’s just so rewarding when a session ends with a smiling student saying they now feel much more confident about their application or interview. And when they email to say they got the job I can literally be found doing a little jig of joy!

Outside of work, I have a son just at the start of his own career, a black Labrador and an old cottage and garden that keeps me busy. My guilty pleasure is buying cookery books.

Education

I went to Loughborough for my BA in Economic History and Politics. I also have an MBA and many coaching qualifications and accreditations.
