Melanie Wortham Careers Adviser

One-to-one careers advice appointments, group workshops and skills training. Support students from non-traditional backgrounds and students with disabilities

  • I have a specialist responsibility for supporting students from non-traditional backgrounds and students with disabilities.
  • I provide guidance appointments, workshops and skills training.
  • I collaborate with Student Services, WP and other relevant departments to provide events and activities to support the above.

My specific area of interest is supporting students from non-traditional backgrounds and students with disabilities. I strive for social mobility and equality and diversity for all our students and collaborate with many departments to achieve this – Student Services, WP, SU and our external partners MyPlus, Neuropool and BrightNetwork to ensure that students have the opportunities, skills and access to fulfil their potential.

I love my job! I count myself very fortunate to be in a role where I will sometimes work with students over a period of time and to see them grow in confidence and develop employability skills is particularly rewarding. One highlight for me over this year has to be seeing some of our neurodiverse students gain work experience and graduate roles despite a pandemic and a competitive graduate labour market.

I joined the Careers Service in September 2016 having previously worked at Cardiff University Careers & Employability in various roles including Careers Adviser and Work Experience Manager. I have a background in HR and has previously held HR roles within the IT, engineering and public sectors.

I really enjoy skiing (though I would say I am definitely not a sporty person and just about competent in my skiing abilities!) This year, in an attempt to stay fit (so I can carry on skiing!), I have taken up kayaking and enjoy being on a tandem with my husband exploring the Dorset coastline.

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Information & Guidance in HE, a Masters in European law and Employment Law and a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management.
