Dr Aki Salo Chair of Academic Assembly
Will undertake the responsibilities of members of governing bodies as set out in the CUC Guide for Members of Higher Education Governing Bodies in the UK.
Born in Finland, Aki obtained his first degree (MSc in Sport Coaching) at the University of Jyväskylä in 1991. A research post brought him to England in 1994 and he later completed his PhD in Biomechanics at the University of Exeter. His first lecturing appointment was in Bath in 1998 and he is currently a Reader in Sport Biomechanics. Aki's main research and teaching interest is to understand the fundamental principles underlying athletes' performance in order to improve individual technique and efficiency.
Aki was the Director of Studies for BSc Sport and Exercise Science in 2005 to 2008. He has served on various University, Faculty and Departmental committees including the Board of Studies in the Faculty of Science, School for Health and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as well as Senate. He served on the University Council for the first time in 2010 to 2013 and then again from 2014 onwards. He was made a Fellow of British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences in 2012 and a Fellow of International Society of Biomechanics in Sports in 2014. He has had a close long term working relationship with UK Athletics, as well as recently with British Skeleton, studying and providing support to their athletes and coaches.
