Mesar Hameed Elected by Non-academic Staff
Will undertake the responsibilities of members of governing bodies as set out in the CUC Guide for Members of Higher Education Governing Bodies in the UK
Mesar attended Exeter College and studied Physics, Computer Science, Maths and Further Maths A-levels at Exeter College and then came to the University of Bath to study Computer Science. His course materials included diagrams and formulae, which were transcribed into braille. He used his computer to complete his coursework, which had a screen-reader system and he sourced books from the RNIB, together with his very good memory.
Mesar has undertaken voluntary work for various organisations, notably working with BT Group in early 2001 for several years, highlighting the exclusion blind and visually impaired people experienced with text messages, provided feedback on prototype solutions over a number of years which resulted in the introduction of the text message reading facility for landline telephones. From 2003-2005 he represented his peers on the Computer Science Department Student, Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) and represented PhD students and tutors on the Teaching Committee and SSLC during 2009-2010. Mesar has also contributed extensively to improving the functionality of screen readers across different IT platforms and provided support for the incorporation of the Arabic language.
Mesar enjoys listening to scientific/technological and ethical programmes on the radio, listening to audio books, being with friends and taking walks in natural surroundings.
