Dr Giovanni Vorraro PhD CAPM CLAD Lecturer in System Engineering

Lecturer, technical lead and management of projects on innovative internal combustion engines and boosting systems for hybrid vehicles.


Giovanni is a lecturer and unit convener for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. He is also involved in experimental and numerical research activities.

Dr Giovanni Vorraro is currently a Lecturer (Assistant professor) in Systems Engineering at the Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Centre (IAAPS) of the University of Bath. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Naples “Federico II” where his research was focused on the experimental and numerical assessment of the performance of automotive turbochargers. Subsequently, he worked as a Thermo-Mechanical Engineer at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and then as a Research Fellow at the LoCARtic-Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in co-operation with Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University Singapore.

Dr Vorraro is interested in innovative research on Internal Combustion Engines, Boosting systems and Vehicles Electrification by means of analytical, numerical and experimental methods. He masters the experimental techniques as applied to the automotive sector employing innovative data acquisition, Real-Time and FPGA systems while he is also proficient in many software packages and programming languages such as Ansys ICEM CFD and Fluent, Mathworks Matlab, National Instruments LabVIEW, Siemens AMESim and C language. During his Ph.D. he also led as a Principal Investigator, a side project on the development of new generation electric bikes funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR). Since 2011 he has presented at the most relevant national and international conferences and published on the most important international journals. As a Ph.D. student he delivered lectures for the Internal Combustion Engine course at the University of Naples.

Currently Dr Vorraro is working on the ADAPT-IPT project developing a Wankel engine to be employed as a range extender for hybrid vehicles and he is publicly engaged with the Advanced Propulsion Centre, InnovateUK and other industrial partners within the automotive sector.


Dr Vorraro has obtained a PhD (2014), Master's degree (2011) and Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (2007) from Università degli studi di Napoli “Federico II”. He is also a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM - Project Management Institution) and holds the Certification of LabVIEW Associate Developer (CLAD - National Instruments).
