Mr Peter Troughton CBE Pro-Chancellor
Pro-Chancellors play a key role in the institution but do not become involved in day-today executive management.
Peter Troughton graduated with an MA in history and law from Trinity College, Cambridge and served in HM Diplomatic Service from 1970 to 1979. On leaving, he joined WHSmith plc where he held a number of senior executive roles before being appointed to the main board as Managing Director Retail. He attended Harvard Business School in 1987.
In 1995 he became Chief Executive officer of Rothschild Asset Management. From 2000 to 2011 he was a director of various private companies, connected to the Rothschild family. He retired this year as chairman of the Lowland Investment Company Plc and in 2016 as vice-chairman of Archant ltd, the regional newspaper and magazine publisher. He is a non-executive director of Waverton Investment Funds plc.
He was a trustee of the Royal Collection Trust from 2007 to 2016 but remains chairman of the Future Programme Board and is a member of the Hillsborough Castle Advisory Committee in Northern Ireland. He is a trustee fo the Royal Opera House Endownment Fund. He was a trustee of the National Gallery from 1988 to 1996 and a governor of St Mary's School, Calne, from 1991 to 2002.
Peter Troughton was appointed Chair of Council in 2006 and Pro-Chancellor in 2013. He was awarded the CBE in 2016 for services to business, education and culture.
