Career
I’m a fourth year civil engineering student and I’ve been working as an SEC for the past year. I wanted to work for the careers team so that I could help students with applications, because I initially struggled with them myself when applying for summer internships. Rejection doesn’t mean that you aren’t good enough, and it is important not to feel discouraged by this! I enjoy interacting with a large variety of students with different goals and being able to support them as a peer.
I recently completed a summer placement at an engineering consultancy, and it was a great experience. I worked as a structural engineer and got to help on a student accommodation building project in Bristol. It was cool to visit the site and see our work being built. Following my experience, I think I’d like to pursue a career structural engineering in the future because I liked how varied all the projects are. I’m really glad that my long hard battle with summer placement applications eventually succeeded! Each one involved application questions, aptitude tests, assessment centres and interviews. Having gone through the process recently, I can relate to the challenges other students may be experiencing and help with it.
Outside of studying, I love reading a good book in the park- especially thrillers and mysteries. I also do the Wordle and the NY times mini crossword every day without fail!
