Mathematics support for BTEC and Access students

A widening participation programme of maths support for BTEC students in local colleges and University of Bath students entering with vocational qualifications.

This project aims to provide maths support for students with vocational qualifications. Students entering the University with these qualifications have reported feeling under-prepared for the mathematics content of their programmes. In the first phase we created maths support and resources for students entering the University with vocational qualifications. In the second phase, working with the Widening Participation Office, we provide a programme of support for BTEC students in local colleges.

Support for students at Bath

Working with the Student Experience Officers and Admissions, we contact prospective students during the application process and directly after receiving their results. They receive information about the mathematics support available to them. They are strongly encouraged to make the best use of this support prior to and during their first semester.

The support includes:

  • pre-sessional resources designed specifically for their needs
  • a non-credit bearing unit designed to support students studying Computer Science and Electronic & Electrical Engineering
  • alternative teaching arrangements during first semester for Sports & Exercise Science Students
  • the offer of individual support to students entering the Faculties of Science and Engineering & Design with Access qualifications

Widening participation: Embedding support with local colleges

Working with the Widening Participation Office, we run a 12 month mathematics programme for BTEC students in local colleges studying:

  • Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Sport and Exercise Science

This includes:

  • a residential maths summer school on campus
  • maths tutorials based at the student's own college
  • general support for the university admissions process
