Robotics and Autonomous Systems MSc

15 months including three-month placement, starting in October 2024

Learn the essential skills and techniques needed to develop robotics, autonomous systems, and embedded artificial intelligence.

Our course will help you take your career forward in a progressive area of engineering. It balances advanced theory with technical skills so that you can learn to develop complete operational robots and autonomous systems.

You’ll explore robotics engineering and software, autonomous systems technologies, processes and products throughout the industry value chain. Other areas you'll cover include computational intelligence, machine learning, embedded systems and sensors.

Your studies will focus on tackling engineering challenges using whole-systems approaches. We’ll give you the tools to analyse and evaluate the impact of resources, processes and products. You’ll consider stakeholder needs and factors such as technical, economic, environmental and social considerations. The focus on practical learning ensures you have the skills to design and build robotic platforms and autonomous systems, using the same systems as those used in industry.

Learn from experts in the field

You’ll learn from academics in our Departments of Computer Science, Electronic & Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Your learning experience will benefit from their expertise across our research centres, where they are advancing research and building international collaborations in this area.

Use specialist facilities

Project work gives you access to facilities and workshops including:

  • rapid prototyping (3D printers, laser cutting, additive manufacturing)
  • advanced electronics systems design
  • power electronics
  • electric vehicles, robotics and autonomous systems
  • advanced CNC machines
  • real-time digital simulation

Start your future here

You’ll graduate with the skills to innovate and deliver resource-efficient practices and solutions for robotic and autonomous systems. Your knowledge will help prepare you for a career in the engineering sector or for further postgraduate study and research. Our graduates work at companies including Thyssen Krupp, Unique Group, CMR Surgical, Ocado Technology and Small Robot Company.

Course structure

This course lasts 15 months. It starts in October 2024 and ends in 2025. Welcome week starts on 23 September 2024.

Occasionally we make changes to our programmes in response to, for example, feedback from students, developments in research and the field of studies, and the requirements of accrediting bodies. You will be advised of any significant changes to the advertised programme, in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Compulsory course units

These compulsory units are currently being studied by our students, or are proposed new units.

Optional course units

You’ll be able to choose two optional units in your second semester. Here are some of the proposed optional units.

Placement

You'll have the chance to apply your knowledge in industry on a three-month industrial placement after Semester 2. You could go on placement with one of our partner companies or businesses such as Intel. You'll have the opportunity to do your individual project at your placement company or at the University.

We will do our best to help you find a placement and support and guide you through the process. Our placements team runs workshops in CV writing and interview techniques to prepare you for applying. However, we cannot guarantee you a position. If you are unable to secure a placement, you’ll carry out your individual project during the summer period instead.
