Environmental Engineering MSc

1 year, starting in October 2024

Specialise in environmental and sustainable processes while developing the technical, professional and digital skills needed in industry.

Our course is for engineers and scientists who want to make a positive impact on the environment, society and the future of our planet. Climate change, GHG emissions and loss of biodiversity are important global issues and the world needs leaders and innovators to design and manage sustainable processes and systems to address these.

If you have that desire to learn how to solve the important environmental challenges we face, then our course can help you towards that goal. We’ll develop your skills, knowledge and understanding to take on these issues against a backdrop of economic factors, environmental compliance and national and international legislation.

Your studies will cover areas such as improving resource efficiency, and how to monitor, manage and mitigate negative environmental consequences. You’ll learn how to apply whole-systems and life-cycle approaches to evaluate the impact of industrial activities while considering current and possible future legislation. This ‘big-picture thinking’ will allow you to move beyond traditional approaches to process engineering.

As part of your learning experience, we make sure you have the opportunity to develop useful skills in areas such as interdisciplinary teamwork, effective communication, networking and time resource management. This will help prepare you to adapt and be successful in a variety of roles in this evolving discipline.

Learn from experts in the field

You’ll learn from academics based in our multidisciplinary and multicultural Department of Chemical Engineering. You’ll benefit from their research expertise and links to industry in the area of sustainability. We regularly invite speakers to present on relevant topics so you can hear from experts in environmental engineering, chemical engineering and sustainable technologies.

Use specialist facilities

Our laboratory facilities range from bench to pilot scale and are equipped to enhance your education and help you become an environmental or chemical engineer. They include:

  • high-specification biochemical engineering labs
  • specialist software to solve environmental engineering problems

Start your future here

Our course has a multidisciplinary focus to help prepare you to work as an environmental engineer in the public and private sectors. You could work in consultancy firms, environmental management and manufacturing, or sustainable product distribution. Or you could play a critical role in stakeholder policy negotiations between economists, lawyers, engineers and environmentalists.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

‘As engineers, we have a role where we can create policies that would affect the globe entirely when it comes to climate change or the environmental problems.’

Bioprocess engineering

5 credits

You will develop knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals and the application of biobased technologies to current societal needs, selecting from alternative feedstocks, technologies and processes. Through a series of experimental, mathematical and computational tasks you will apply skills and knowledge to understand how biologically based technologies are developed and implemented.

Dissertation

30 credits

Undertake critical data acquisition and analysis, and work both independently and as part of a research group to undertake research using a combination of different approaches which could be computational, laboratory, or literature based. Working directly with academic staff you will develop and deliver research focused on enhancing the sustainability and environmental credentials of new or existing technologies or techniques relevant to environmental engineering.

Emergent and emerging technologies

5 credits

Develop your understanding of emergent and emerging technologies for energy generation and advanced processing, process integration or process intensification aimed at minimising anthropometric environmental impact. You will adapt processes and methodologies balancing environmental, social and economic requirements, and evaluate ways to convert, store, transmit and deliver energy and produce the products required in society, with reference to the UN sustainability goals.

Environmental economics, politics and management

5 credits

Apply your knowledge of traditional and advanced environmental, economic, and political concepts and models to a range of environmental engineering applications. You will consider the impact of economic, legislative and political steering tools upon the protection of the environment and natural resources.

Environmental engineering design

15 credits

Working on multi-disciplinary problems, develop knowledge of process design, economic analysis as well as modelling software and simulation tools, which assist process design practices. Working in small groups and using critical thinking and interpersonal skills, such as, leadership and time management you will holistically design different unit operations for a sustainable chemical engineering process, mapping the outcomes to the UN sustainable development goals.

This unit spans the following periods of study:

Foundations of sustainability and environmental science

10 credits

Develop your understanding of the scientific foundations of environmental processes and ecology. You'll learn about the behaviour of contaminants and the processes for their avoidance and removal. You will also explore social, economic, cultural, ethical, and the political context that engineers work within, and be able to assess the sustainability of processes. Working in multi-disciplinary groups you will conduct a case study to explore motivations and priorities of different stakeholders.

Professional and research development

10 credits

Advance your knowledge of professional skills in areas such as employability, commercial awareness, continuing professional development (CPD) and change management. You will develop skills to evaluate problems in the face of complexity and uncertainty and identify gaps in research in preparation for your dissertation. Working with a member of staff, you will develop the research proposal for your dissertation.

This unit spans the following periods of study:

Waste management

5 credits

Develop an understanding of waste and emissions legislation with a particular focus on environmental law and waste management in an industrial context. You will learn how to characterise and classify waste and emissions in industrial, urban and environmental processes to recognise process inefficiencies and opportunities for resource recovery and valorisation. You will become familiar with a range of established and emerging technologies for waste management and emissions control.

Water engineering

5 credits

Develop your understanding of water resources, water quality, contaminants, and water monitoring. Working on real case studies, you'll explore different technologies for water supply and wastewater treatments in municipal and industrial contexts. You will advance your understanding of complex water and wastewater treatment systems and critically assess their performance through appropriate indices. A site visit to a water treatment works may be included.
