International Development with Economics MSc

2 years part time, starting in September 2024

Explore global development by focusing on economic concepts, such as social identity, collective action, power relations, and psychological biases.

During this master’s you’ll address the contemporary challenges of global economic development.

You’ll adopt a multifaceted focus to analyse the real-world impacts of economic policy. This will allow you to see how the assumptions of economic theory can differ from lived reality, especially in impoverished communities.

This course is influenced by Bath’s longstanding engagement in international development and applied economic analysis. You’ll critically assess real-world case studies to draw links across global, regional, national and local scales.

Different course pathways to specialise your skills

You have the choice of taking this specialist MSc in International Development with Economics course pathway or one of three other course pathways:

The selection of a distinct pathway allows you the flexibility to pursue areas that interest you and are relevant to your career aspirations. Each pathway is available as full-time or part-time study.

Gain real-world experience with a work-based practicum

As an alternative to writing a dissertation, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake an eight-week work-based practicum. This is your chance to gain practical experience to complement your studies.

During your practicum, you’ll work with an organisation involved in international development. You'll use the experiences you'll gain to write an academic report reflecting on a particular area of professional practice as part of your assessment.

Some previous students have completed their practicum with:

  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
  • The Centre for Development Studies
  • MicroSave Consulting
  • EdUKaid
  • The Washing Machine Project

Finding a practicum is your own responsibility. We can’t guarantee practicum, but you will receive tailored support from our specialist team to help you find suitable opportunities.

Some practicums are paid, others cover expenses, and some are unpaid. Please see the budgeting section of this page for more details.

Learn from experts in their field

You’ll learn from experts in international development, conflict resolution and humanitarianism, as well as staff in the wider Department of Social & Policy Sciences community. Their passion, knowledge, experience and research shape their teaching to enhance your learning experience.

Gain important career skills

Upon successful completion of this course, you'll leave with:

  • an in-depth and interdisciplinary understanding of the theories and concepts that underpin contemporary humanitarian action and conflict response
  • a critical understanding of humanitarian, peacebuilding and development policy and practice
  • practical skills in research, analysis and communication and an understanding of how these can be applied to the fields of humanitarianism, conflict and development
  • a rich experience of working with people from a wide range of disciplinary, professional and national backgrounds

Graduate prospects

This course provides an excellent background for those wishing to pursue careers in fields that aim to improve people’s lives. These include the international development, sustainability, humanitarian and peacebuilding sectors.

You will be qualified to work in a wide variety of roles, including social research, public policy, public information and campaigning.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

Explore core concepts and economic models explaining consumption, production, and distribution under conditions of scarcity.

You'll develop an understanding of theories of economic change at local, national, and global levels, with reference to markets affecting low-and middle-income countries.

You will critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of the way economists conceptualise individual behaviour, the allocation of resources and its effects over time and space.

Education, globalisation and international development

Analyse the relationship between education, globalisation and international development.

You'll develop a critical understanding of key theories, policies and practices in different educational contexts and countries, particularly in the Global South. Global political economy

10 credits

Develop an economic understanding of the evolution of patterns of world production, trade, regional integration, and inequality.

Adopting a political economy perspective, you'll explore and question theoretical debates of the concept of globalisation to explain the role of external constraints on development.

You'll gain insights into the role of institutions at national, regional, and global levels, and how they shape development policies and outcomes.

History and theory of international development

15 credits

Examine the main issues, approaches and theories which constitute the field of international development.

You'll learn how these have been conceived, and changes in the ways they have been understood over time.

Humanitarianism

10 credits

Develop your understanding of the emergence, history and core principles of humanitarianism as an organised response to human suffering.

You'll learn about the institutional structures, funding and range of activities of contemporary humanitarianism. You'll also explore the ethical and practical dilemmas commonly faced by humanitarian actors in practice.

Management of international development

10 credits

Learn how to identify actors, organisations, and financial flows involved in the implementation of development and humanitarian policies and programmes in different institutional contexts.

In this unit, you'll examine dominant and critical approaches to understanding how these are conceptualised and managed. This includes their evolution, and arguments for and against.

Practicum

30 credits

During the practicum route, you'll apply your skills and knowledge to a specific field of professional practice.

You'll produce a critical, academic report on a specific area of professional practice in international development or humanitarianism in the light of first-hand experience of it, drawing upon ideas and skills developed throughout the taught phase of your chosen pathway and your 300 hours of work-based experience.

The politics and practice of sustainability
