The University of Bath has retained its top ten position in the influential Guardian University Guide, ranking 8th nationally and number one in the South West in its latest 2022 edition (published this weekend).

Complementing the University’s overall position - which means Bath remains in the top ten for the three main university rankings - in addition to the latest The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide and the Complete University Guide - 13 subject areas are included in the Guide’s top ten list:

  • Accounting & Finance (5th);
  • Architecture (4th);
  • Business, Management & Marketing (6th);
  • Chemical Engineering (6th);
  • Civil Engineering (5th);
  • Mechanical Engineering (2nd);
  • Pharmacy & Pharmacology (9th);
  • Politics (8th);
  • Psychology (2nd);
  • Social Policy (7th);
  • Social Work (8th);
  • Sociology (4th);
  • Sports Science (2nd).

President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian White, said: “This latest Guardian University Guide ranking is a fantastic result for the University and testament to the efforts of very many people across our community. Despite the challenging year we have all had, it truly highlights the strength and quality of our teaching and courses. I was delighted to see that we were second in course satisfaction overall and that seven subjects were in the top five."

The Guardian’s metrics for compiling the league table include:

  • A Guardian score;
  • Student satisfaction with course, teaching and feedback;
  • Student to staff ratio;
  • Spend per student;
  • Average entry tariff;
  • Value added score;
  • Career prospects after 15 months;
  • Percentage of first year students continuing into the second year.
