In the past months, suggestions of what the University’s new supercomputer should be named have poured in from across campus.
It was great to receive over 70 suggestions, and it has been fantastic to see this level of engagement across the University.
Research Computing narrowed the suggestions down to the top 10 finalists. Following a popular vote, we have now got our winning name and are please to announce our new supercomputing environment will be called: Nimbus
A fitting and great short name
It is a great short name that rolls on the tongue and is fitting for our powerful new research computing environment.
Nimbus is the name of dramatic looking, continuously evolving clouds spread across the sky. It is also the radiant light of glory that encircles a saint’s head.

Three staff members suggested our winning name:
- Alice Hovanessian, Research Project & Finance Coordinator, Research and Innovation Services
- Marek Cyrklewicz, City Caretaker, Accommodation Operations
- Professor Chris Jennison, Department of Mathematical Sciences.
Thank you to everyone that took part in our naming competition - and a huge congratulations to our winners.
Over 140 people took part in the vote to find our winning name, with one third voting for Nimbus as one of their top three names.
Nimbus will be fully built in the second half of Semester 2
Build of the new cloud supercomputer is progressing at pace and will be completed in the second half of Semester 2.
A group of early access users will then get access to thoroughly test the system before it is available for all researchers from across campus.
