The European Academy of Sciences is an international association of distinguished scholars that elects the best European scientists with the aim of strengthening European science and scientific cooperation.
Professor Paul Raithby was elected for his outstanding contributions to research in inorganic and materials chemistry as well as his work promoting scientific collaborations with science communities in the UK and across Europe.
His research is focussed on developing new “smart” materials that have applications as switches and sensors. He has pioneered dynamic methods for determining the structures of molecules as they undergo chemical reactions in order to “watch chemistry happen” at the molecular level. He has used this information to design new chemical sensors.
For the last eight years he has also been head of the Directed Assembly Network, which has over 1000 academic and industrial members, and has promoted scientific collaborations in the UK and across Europe.
Paul said: “I am honoured and delighted to have been elected as a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences. It is particularly important at this time that the UK strengthens its links with scientists across mainland Europe for the benefit of all."
