Dr Nikoletta Fotaki from the University’s Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, and the Centre of Therapeutic Innovation, has been named a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), an award that is reserved for leaders in the pharmaceutical field and reflects professional excellence and a sustained, positive impact to global health.

Dr Fotaki’s career spans 16 years of active research, education, and professional activities focused on various aspects of biopharmaceutics. Her research has led to biopharmaceutics tools being developed to ensure people (children, adults and people with comorbidities) receive better and safer drugs. Her use of tools reduces, and sometimes eliminates, the need for clinical trials.

The findings from Dr Fotaki’s research are also of interest to regulators, with the new technologies and approaches she has developed being implemented during the drug development and approval process.

Following the announcement of the fellowship, Dr Fotaki said: “I am truly honoured to be in the esteemed group of 2021 fellows. This is a key milestone in my career as a scientist. I am grateful to the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and to everyone who have supported me on this exciting journey.”

This year’s fellowships will be awarded during the opening of the AAPS annual meeting, (AAPS 2021 PHarmSCi 360), which will be held in Philadelphia, USA on October 17. Dr Fotaki will be attending remotely.
