The Assembly is the statutory body representing the interests of all members in the University’s Education and Research job family (Professors, Readers, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, Senior Research Fellows, Research Fellows, Research Associates, Clinical Directors and Consultant Senior Lecturers).

Academic Assembly meets twice per year; the dates for the forthcoming academic year are:

  • Wednesday 27 October 2021
  • Tuesday 3 May 2022

The Assembly discusses relevant academic issues of University life and passes motions forward to the University’s Senate, if it so decides. It can also express an opinion of any matter related to the University. In addition, the members of Academic Assembly elect representatives to the University’s Senate, Council and Court.

Alan says:” Jane has done a fantastic job to increase member participation in Academic Assembly business. Her instigation of a review of Academic Assembly was timely and I look forward to addressing the review committee’s recommendations. I hope that our meetings will continue to be relevant and stimulating to members such that any decisions made by the assembly will be representative of opinion and well-informed.

Academic Assembly has an important role to play in the governance of the University through its representation on Senate and in Council. As the University embarks on a period of reflection in the post pandemic context, I will work hard to represent the assembly, working collaboratively and productively with all stakeholders from within and beyond the institution.

I encourage members to contact me about any concerns they may have, not simply the current ‘big issues’, and I will be happy to explore how Academic Assembly might be able to help resolve these concerns”.

Alan joined the University in 2008 and has held positions of DoS, DoT and Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching). He is a National Teaching Fellow, Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the British Computer Society. He represented computer science on the recent national subject TEF pilots and is currently chairing the national advisory group that is reviewing the QAA subject benchmark statement for both undergraduate and postgraduate provision in computing.
