We are delighted that our own Dr Nigel Johnston has been awarded the 2021 IMechE Bramah Medal. The prestigious Medal has been awarded annually by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers since 1968 for outstanding achievement tending to advance the science of mechanical engineering, particularly in the field of hydraulic engineering. The citation which sums up why Nigel received the award reads: “for outstanding contributions to fluid power research and education, particularly in the field of fluid borne noise” .

Nigel has completed numerous consultancy and research projects across a wide array of industries, with a special focus on pressure pulsation, wave effects and acoustic phenomena in pumps, pipes and hoses. He has developed computational tools to assist researchers and practitioners with acquiring and analysing dynamic and acoustic data. His software packages, specifically FBN for measurement of fluid-borne noise and the Prasp Matlab/Simulink toolbox for modelling fluid-borne noise are in use in several leading engineering companies. Nigel is also the main creator behind the Centre's unique CPD course "FPN - Noise in hydraulic systems".

Well done Nigel and thank you for your work!
