The University is no longer providing ‘Sophos Endpoint Protection’. From 31 May, we will no longer provide antivirus updates for this software and your personal computer will not be protected.

Please note that if you are still running Windows 7 on your personal device, this operating system is no longer supported, and you should update it to Windows 10, to keep your computer safe and secure from new threats.

Guidance for Windows

Sophos Endpoint Protection will appear as a white shield with a blue ‘S’ in it, in the system tray (towards the bottom-right of the taskbar). Please note that you may need to select the caret ^ to show all the icons in your system tray.

To ensure you remain protected you should:

  1. Remove Sophos Endpoint Protection
  2. Either activate Windows Defender (which normally happens automatically) or install an alternative antivirus product

Microsoft Windows Defender provides good protection for Windows 10 devices in most circumstances, but you may wish to activate other features or use another antivirus provider that gives additional protection.

Guidance for macOS

Sophos Endpoint Protection will appear as a shield with an ‘S’ in it, in the menu bar (towards the top-right of the screen).

If you have installed the University-provided Sophos Endpoint Protection on your Mac, you will need to Remove the University Sophos installation.

Whilst macOS doesn’t have a visible antivirus application pre-installed, it does receive regular malware definitions directly from Apple, but as with Windows, you may wish to activate other features or use another antivirus provider that gives additional protection.
