Virtual Masterclasses

The #MeToo movement shone a fresh light on inequalities and harassment. This has created a climate of social responsibility for these issues. Addressing inequalities is not just the right thing to do morally, and required legally through the Single Equalities Act 2010, it also impacts the bottom line. For example, the Chair of UK Research and Innovation is proposing the withdrawal of funding from universities that fail to effectively combat bullying and harassment.

We have created a number of 30 to 60 minutes masterclasses to provide you with an overview of the key areas, locate the unwitting nature of our complicity, and show how fresh inclusion nudges and concepts can challenge resistance to change. All sessions provide a safe space to explore and judgement is not tolerated.

Micro-aggressions

Discover the big impact of the little things in everyday life. A micro-aggression is the belief and commonplace verbal, behavioural and environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory or negative racial, gender, sexual orientation, and religious slights and insults to the target person or group. This masterclass will help you recognise the types of micro-aggressions we all make, the impact they have, and hints and tips to avoid making them.

Cultural Sensitivity

Improve your intercultural competence with cultural awareness and understanding of the impact of cultural differences. Gain a better understanding of the cultural challenges facing multicultural workplaces and obtain some practical tools to reduce cross-cultural misunderstanding and encourage positive cross-cultural working relationships.

The Invisible Problem

Understand how we are all socially conditioned and adhere to different cultural codes. Discover the nature of unconscious bias, how it works including affinity and confirmation bias and the impact within the work environment. Explore strategies and tips for managing unconscious bias.

Being an Equality Ally

Take a deep dive into what it actually means to be an equality ally. An ally is someone who supports individuals who are victims of inequalities and stand up for what is right. Explore what ally-ship is, share actionable steps that allies can take, and celebrate what allies are already doing to contribute to a progressive inclusive culture. Break free from the socially conditioned matrix and learn how to become an Anti-Racist and Anti-Sexist as opposed to simply non-racist and non-sexist.

Unequal Power and Privilege

There are many things that make up our experience of life, privilege, referring to the advantages a person can inherit from birth and accumulate over time, and power can give us a great advantage but with that comes great responsibility. Do you create the space and opportunity for everyone to be heard and listened too? Does your identity help or hinder you in day-to-day life?

Scope of Everyday Sexism and Harassment

Taken from the University’s Bringing in the Bystander training, this masterclass focuses on the everyday behaviours and actions that fall under the popular social media hashtag ‘#everydaysexism’ and how these can manifest in both student and staff interactions and practices. Acknowledging that these behaviours occur on a continuum, we explore how these behaviours and actions can escalate and also how we can challenge these attitudes and support staff and students alike.
