Euan Spence has received the John Todd Award from the Oberwolfach Foundation and the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach - an international mathematics research centre situated in the German Black Forest.
This award is given every three years to a "young excellent mathematician" working in the area of mathematics called numerical analysis.
Euan was given this award based on his research in numerical methods and analysis for wave scattering problems. A key feature of Euan's research has been to use techniques from pure mathematics (the area of "semiclassical analysis") to tackle these problems arising in applied mathematics. The laudation for the award describes how "Euan has made a series of contributions to this mature research area which have moved the field on in leaps and bounds, in both our theoretical understanding, and in new ideas and new formulations for numerical simulation."
Euan said: "I feel very honoured to be given this award, both because of the leading role the Oberwolfach institute plays in the international mathematics community, and also because my first visit to Oberwolfach 10 years ago was a very formative experience in my career. I am very grateful to everyone who arranged and supported my nomination."
