James Davenport, Hebron and Medlock Professor of Information Technology in the Department of Computer Science, has been awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science by the West University of Timişoara, Romania, in recognition of his pioneering work in the field of computer algebra systems and his worldwide recognition as an expert in symbolic computation.

The University’s oration highlighted James' erudition; particularly his ‘deep and broad familiarity with computer algebra and cryptography-related fields’ and the energy which he had employed in making his ‘brilliant contributions to the scientific fields where he worked’.

The oration also drew attention to James’ broader contributions to the University of Bath, and to national and international organisations such as the British Computer Society. They also highlighted his recent Chairmanship of the International Mathematical Union’s Committee on Electronic Information and Communication.
