Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) aims to engage a broad range of stakeholders to discuss how science and technology can be used in the best possible way to not only contribute to solve today’s problems, but also create a world that will be desirable for future generations.
About the Foundations in RRI course
The University has commissioned Orbit RRI to provide a short online self-study course which provides a brief introduction to RRI.
The course is aimed at anyone interested in learning a bit more about RRI as well as researchers seeking simple tools and ideas on how to embed RRI into a research project. It contains a mixture of videos, text and self-reflection exercise.
The course should take between 1-2 hours to complete. You can do so in one go or over a few sessions.
After working through the course you will:
- understand the background behind the development and adoption of RRI
- have knowledge of both the AREA Framework as it has been adopted in the UK by EPSRC, and the EU Pillars of RRI
- gain familiarity with some of the critiques of and challenges for RRI
- be able to apply the AREA Framework to a project and use Orbit’s PERSUE tool to understand how RRI might be carried forward in that project.

To access the course:

- Set up an account using your email address and password created by you.
- Click on the Your Account tab. You should see a list of courses available to you. Enrol on the ‘Foundations in RRI for the University of Bath’ course and follow the instructions that take you through it.
